So serious he looks, asking such a grim question. He does
not truly mean if you had to.  Instead, he wants to ask if you
had a choice.  His answers are  just as grim  as his inquiry:
all talk of  longing to die with  his family,  with those who he
cared for so much. But that ship has sailed and sunk to the
bottom of a great sea.

                                         Maybe dying of the taint will be better.
